Activity title: Creating a Video for Beginners to Cricket

To make a video for beginners to cricket to encourage participation and understanding of the game.

Introduction
10 minutes
  • Introduce the lesson by explaining that they are going to be making a video of ‘A beginners guide to cricket’.
  • Look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/rules_and_equipment/default.stm and use the interactive menus to find out about different parts of the game, eg, Fielders, scoring runs, ways of getting out, etc.
  • Go through what the class think are the important features for beginners to understand and make a list.
  • Possibly watch the video through the following link, which is about the basics of cricket, but also the maths involved in cricket: http://www.teachers.tv/video/21931 and discuss.
   
Main Activity
40 Minutes
  • On the board make a plan as a class to ‘what should go in to the video’ on one side and ‘how it should be filmed’ on the other side, eg, “tossing the coin to decide who bats and bowls” on one side and “two pupils walking in front of stumps and tossing coin” on the other side. Ideas from the introductory video my help.
  • Once the plan is complete, the class need to decide who is going to be carrying out the various jobs, eg, filming, acting different scenes, directing, etc. and make a plan.
  • Carry out the filming of the video over a few sessions and either ensure it is perfect on the camera or download it and edit using a program such as ‘Windows movie maker’ where text and music could be added.
   
Plenary
10 Minutes
  • Gather as a class and watch the video together and feedback the positive and negative points.
  • Show the video to other classes in the school.
